#Colectiv. The fire that took 29 lives and left 155 in hospital

Sometimes the reality seems a cruel joke. Of all the situations, the one where you wake up in the morning and find out that your friends have burned alive is horrible. As horrible as the reality we face regarding the way in which the Romanian system works – the one where innocent people are dying so that someone can take an additional bribe, the one that functions on the principle ” never mind, it can go on like this”; the one where the dead are to blame because they were out of the house to spend an evening in a club. The hospitals that are too few ( 425 in total), the churches that are too many ( 18.300) and the 0 understanding of what’s happening to this country.

How else can we explain just sitting here, not doing anything, including now?! We all discuss the subject on social networks, we are outraged, we cry out loud – the wolf! but in practice nothing happens. The dead remain dead.

She is Mimi Voicu. Young, cheerful, a good person and a good friend. Always there for you, always ready to make you laugh. She had suffered burns on 80% of the body, too much for her to cope. She died this morning. She was 32 years old. When I met her she was making plans for this fall, thinking about her next trip.

Mimi VoicuShe joined  # MandrudeRomânia campaign in May because she was proud of her country, of our traditions. Mimi painted the benches in Cismigiu park alongside us, eager to help as much as possible. Now she is just a name on the list of deceased of the club Colectiv fire.

I’m still shocked, stunned and helpless. One thought hunts me obsessively: too ugly. To representative for the system!

And I wonder if everyone involved in this tragedy – from the business owners, the state officials who turned a blind eye to all irregularities, the district mayor who drank his coffee without carrying, the policemen who refused to escort to the hospital the burned victims, etc- have at least one little remorse? Do they sleep soundly knowing that tens of mothers will no longer embrace their child?

I thank all the volunteers Instead, those who rushed to help, donated blood and those which helped no matter what. They washed some of the shame, brought some hope in the humanity and kindness of the Romanian people.

For all others who seek the comfort in their home while reading the latest news, satisfied only to criticize and comment, I wish them all to see the truth, to let the saints and God alone (God wants you innocent, not stupid!), to realize how things really are before another tragedy happens. Because next time it could happen to their children.
