As we start September one big surprise shacks the travel & leisure industry in Romania – one of the biggest tour operators – the travel agency Mareea announced its insolvency. Moreover, the agency has already withdrawn from ANAT letting its customers know that they will not be able to honor their already paid holidays. The number of tourists left without the possibility to have their dream holiday: 1,100.

The situation created discomfort and panic among travel agencies acting as resellers especially as Mareea is the second travel agency in Romania announcing its insolvency, the first announcement being made in August by Genius Travel Agency. Starting yesterday (3 September) Mareea opened a crisis cell to respond to tourists and partners affected by the opening of insolvency proceedings and reorganization. For the time being, those interested can find out more information by calling the phone numbers found on the website www.mareea.ro or by sending a request to office@mareea.ro. To recover their money from the travel agency, tourists that do not accept compensatory solutions offered by the tour operator and hoteliers can also contact the company Generali Romania which issued the $ 50,000 insolvency policy (policy no: 8100258X).

Now, if we also take into consideration the statement released by the National Authority for Tourism which states that approximately 50% of all travel agencies in Romania have no insurance policy (1.953 agencies nationwide have failed to show proof of their insurance policy out of all 4,000 travel agencies and tour operators), the logical solution for all of us would be to pay our holidays directly online to the hoteliers and airlines. This way the chance of having to stay home will drastically decrease.
