Germany, among the favorite destinations for Romanians in 2015

With 79.7 million international overnight stays the incoming tourism of Germany recorded in 2015, for the sixth consecutive time, a significant growth. The country remains a popular destination especially for young people (aged between 15 and 34 years), 49% of them choosing Germany as a city break destination, while the number of tourists over 55 years represent 27% of all those who visit the country, most of them choosing long trips (about 9 days).

Petra Hedorfer, President of  DZT, explains: “The numbers for 2015 have exceeded our estimates and all of UNWTO forecasts, which were based on a  global growth for the tourism industry of 3-4%. Even compared with the biggest tourist destinations in Europe, Germany can earn points, being an engine of growth.” Compared to 2014, Germany recorded a plus of 2.1 million overnight stays, an increase of 50%, nine of the ten source markets for incoming tourism to Germany being in Europe.

First place is held by the Netherlands with 11.2 million overnight stays. Switzerland comes in second with 6.4 million overnight stays, while Britain – which generated 7.4% more overnight stays than last year, ranks fourth, after the USA. The following places are held by Italy, Austria, Denmark, France and Belgium. But the largest growth of the European market in 2015 was recorded by Spain (24.2%), reaching 2.7 million overnight stays.

Romania, among the first 20 source markets

The number of overnight stays coming from Romanian tourists traveling to Germany also increased: from 728 161 in 2014 to 801.705in 2015, an increase of 10.1%, putting Romania in the top 20 markets for incoming tourism to Germany. The main reasons for traveling here are: holidays (43%), visiting friends and relatives (30%) and business (27%). Most tourists are traveling by car (67%), airplane (22%) and coach/buses (10%). On average, the Romanian tourists traveling in Germany spend 36 euros per day, and 31% of them reserve all aspects of their holiday online.
