
Considered unique in the country, given the longevity, consistency and impressive number of celebrities who took to the stage all this years, the festival Sibiu Jazz Festival is the oldest event of its kind in Romania and one of the oldest jazz festivals in the world, reason for which Sibiu was declared the Romanian “Capital of Jazz”. Being recognized as one of the most important cultural events of the year’s the Festival will be broadcast live by the TVR – the Romanian National Television.
Sibiu Jazz Club was founded in 1970 by enthusiastic jazz fans, under the “patronage” of the Communist Youth Union Sibiu. For reasons of “ideological pollution” the festival is moved from Ploesti to Sibiu in 1974, where jazz enjoyed the respect and support of local authorities.
This year’s edition will start with young talents contest Sibiu Jazz Festival, now in its 15th consecutive edition.
Thursday, October 22, you will be conquered by the groove rhythms of the “Jazz Talks” by Swiss trio Vein and by the Italian sounds of Niccolo Faraci.
Friday evening begins with an exceptional concert: Dorantes – “InterAccion” (for the first time in Romania) one of the most interesting and captivating pianists and flamenco composers in the world. The second concert of the series will be supported by Edi Jak Neumann International Quartet, which will delight the audience with a program “In Memoriam Ornette Coleman”.
Saturday we enjoy some good Hebrew jazz-inspired songs of Amos Hoffman, an electrifying combination of oriental melodic and rhythmic influences intertwined with American groove. The show will continue with Buena Vista Social Club, bringing on stage the Cuban musical universe. Saturday evening will end with Soneros de Verdad whose music is a delightful mixture of Son, Danzon and jazz.
Last day of the festival brings to Sibiu the pianist Sebastian Spanache, the magical sounds coming from the Indian Ocean islands of the Island Jazz Project, the singer Monika Njava, celebrated as a national diva in Madagascar and Linley Marthe who is considered today one of the most prestigious jazz bass players in the world.
