8.44 million tourists visited our country in 2014

Curious to see where Romania is situated when it comes to tourists preferences? Then let us take a look over the data announced by the National Statistics Institute (INS) for last year: the tourist arrivals and overnight stays in hotel structures increased by 6.6% and 4.8% compared to 2013. In short, the arrivals reached 8.44 million and the overnight stays at 20.23 million. In terms of foreign tourist arrivals in hotels, guesthouses and hostels, most of them are from Europe (77.2% of the total foreign tourists), 85.5% being from EU countries. Therefore, first on the list of EU countries as tourists visiting Romania are the Hungarians (29.9%), Bulgarians (24.2%), German (9.4%), Italian (7.1%), Poles (6.2%) and Austrians (4%).

Total number of foreign tourists visiting Romania in 2014: 1,91 million.

The average length for a vacation / visit in 2014 was 2.5 days for the Romanian tourists and 2 days for foreign tourists. The hotels accommodated 32.9% out of the total no. of tourists, 20.2% stayed in villas and 19% in cottages.

Regarding the Romanians going on holiday abroad, they numbered 12,290,000, an increase of 8.2% compared to 2013. The preferred means of transport remain the cars and coaches – 76.1% of the total departures.

In Romania, in 2013 tourism had a total contribution of 33.1 billion lei ($ 9.9 billion) to the country’s GDP, representing 5.1% of GDP, according to the World Tourism Council (WTTC). The Council estimated an increase of 5.4% for tourism to GDP in 2014, followed by an average growth rate of 3.8% per year until 2024, up to 50.8 billion lei.

Curious now which were the favorite holiday destinations for the Romanians? Let’s start with Austria, Greece, France and Turkey and go on with more exotic destinations – Asia, Africa, Zanzibar, Nepal, Tibet and India. In the end, the destination matters less, is the journey itself that counts. Bon voyage!
