As a passenger this year you were faced with few protests, strikes and delays on some international flights. While some air operators announced their portfolio expansion and the introduction of new routes, Air France it is forced to cut jobs in order to stay competitive.
Recently the Air France officials confirmed the plan to cutoff 2,900 jobs by 2017 while also eliminating 14 aircraft from their fleet that are operating on long distances flights – both measures necessary in order to reduce costs. In other words, until next year 1,700 office jobs, 900 flight attendants posts and 300 pilots will be laid off.
Furthermore, Air France also plans to cancel the order for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, according to Reuters. This restructuring represents 4.9% of the total workforce of Air France, 3.1% of their staff formed by the merger of Air France and KLM in 2011.
Air France-KLM is the second largest air operator in Europe and the company wishes to maintain its market position successfully facing the low-cost airlines in Europe and the Middle East in their competition for the long-distance flights. Hence the Air France decisions for restructuring. For now, however, the company is in open conflict with the main pilots union – SNPL due to the restructuring plan.
