I heard this saying many times before and now, in my 30s and after hundreds of mileage, I rather choose to believe in Santa Claus. No matter how long your walks are, you’ll end up at the gym. It’s a fact. To prove it I did a masochist experiment after a bet, at the beginning of 2014. One year at the gym versus voluntary walking: from work to home, to shopping, taking children to school. At the end of the 365 days I was really agile – after all I had gain experience. My friend on the other hand had that perfect tone obtained by exercising at the gym that makes you go green with envy. So this month I took some different approach and got myself to the fitness center. To cheat a little and recover my handicap, I turned to technology and friends – where, when and what have they lately. It is how I arrived at NextFit in a cold evening, when I had the courage to face the traffic on Unirii Boulevard.
You know that feeling when something it’s about to happen and you do not know if it is good or bad? It suddenly struck me when I saw the broad smile on my instructors face. But I was determined not to give in to my weakness. So I stayed still as they equipped me. I felt somehow Bond 007 as I put the costume and the straps tighten around my body. During the warm up I was already defying – what, just that? That’s it? This slight vibration on the muscles? Mihai Jidov – my assigned instructor – continued to smile while increasing the frequency of the electro- vibrations on my exercises. 20 minutes later, sweaty and determined, I successfully completed the training. Hard by the end but bearable. There were only 20 minutes I though! Going down the stairs to the locker room, I began feeling my feet like clay and trembling. It is when I understood the meaning of that big smile. But even so, how bad could it be? I had had heavy workouts before at other gyms, where I sat for an hour +.
The next day I could not move. In fact, when I finally did it was RoboCop style. Climbing stairs become a real adventure, as well as sitting down on a chair. On the other hand, after the pain started to calm down, the benefits could quickly be seen. After several workouts the results become visible. But it is still a matter of will to finish the training every time. Now I know what that big smile is hiding 🙂 ! Oh well, no pain no gain, right?
